SAFE MONEY IS A REAL PROBLEM WITH IE 10
By Richard J Wiltgen
I note that many of these reviews seem to be of Kaspersky Anti-Virus, a very good program, not Kaspersky Internet Security. This, it seems to me, may lead to some confusion in the minds of readers. The latter is a much more comprehensive program, encompassing more than anti-virus protection. I purchased Internet Security 2014 in late October of 2013 from Amazon at a very competitive price. The anti-virus software was installed with little or no difficulty. Safe Money, however, is a real headache. It is now past midnight and I have been struggling with it since seven this morning. Kaspersky support was worse than useless. I sent them two e-mails with their "Report Makers" showing the specifics of my computer(s), none of which have been answered. I have also spoken to them over the phone twice, only to be told to contact Microsoft and sent up other blind alleys. I have installed it on three computers and get the same results on all of them. Apparently, Safe Money 2014 is infinitely more problematic to activate than Safe Money 2013, requiring manual (rather than automatic)activation of each "addon," as well as other problems. At this point, I have little faith that Kaspersky Technical Support will ever provide the required assistance to activate an unduly cumbersome program. My advice is to avoid it until they have worked out all the bugs and are willing to seriously support it. I am sorry I cannot give it a better review. I installed it with wonderful expectations. Kaspersky has fallen far short of those expectations. I give it four stars for anti-virus protection and a zero for the Safe Money program and technical support.
UPDATE: After countless hours of struggling with the problem, I finally found its root source, the interaction of Safe Money with Internet Explorer 10. Kaspersky is a very aggressive system, what you would want if your concern is security, and IE 10 has countless problems interacting with other systems. Once I switched browsers, Safe Money worked flawlessly. Prospective purchasers should be aware of this problem. I hope others find my experience helpful.

If you are a long time Kaspersky KIS user things have changed with 2014.

When upgrading to 2014 from 2013 you'll notice that all advanced settings have been removed. Kaspersky now locks those settings based on what most people would use. It has basically simplified the settings to High, Recommended and Low in the anti virus for example.

You cannot configure it to skip archives that are over a certain size anymore which makes unzipping a large file really slow, increase or decrease heuristic analysis, scan only new and modified files etc.

All these setting now are controlled by High, Recommended , and Low of which no description is provided as to what it actually does.

Most other features have been similarly streamlined. It is a very basic setup now. It is still the best suite out there for protection in my opinion but has greatly reduced one's ability to configure it.

DOWNLOAD A TRIAL BEFORE YOU PURCHASE to see if these new changes do not provide what you need.

Kaspersky Pure still has all advanced features as does KIS 2013. You can always use KIS 2013(not windows 8.1 compatible) with a KIS 2014 license.

Mixed results

PROS:
-improved GUI responsiveness
-cleaner interface
-scores pretty much at the top of every independent AV testing
-good virus database
-excellenct heuristics
-smaller footprint on RAM & CPU
-safe money works well with IE 10

CONS:
-crashed continuously on the Win 7 machine despite having no other anti-virus, anti-malware program and I had uninstalled the 2013 product as per Kaspersky's directions.
-updates still slow
-scanning still a bit slow
-safe money doesn't work well with Firefox browser
-kaspersky is slow to keep plugin updates along with Firefox updates. If you use Firefox as your main browser, either you choose to use the old version compatible with your Kaspersky plugins or download the newer, more secure Firefox browser with some of the Kaspersky plugins not working

AMBIGUOUS:
-Kaspersky's decision to close the ports instead of stealthing them. Their reasoning is that as long as the ports are secured, stealthing them isn't necessary.

I've used all the releases of Kaspersky from 2012 - 2014 on XP, Vista, 7 and 8. Couple months back, I installed KIS 2014 on Win 7 and Windows 8. On Windows 8, KIS ran smoothly and flawlessly. The UI while still not as good as Norton's is noticeably better than its predecessors. On the flipside - it crashed continuously on Win 7 prompting a reinstall which didn't help at all. Didn't contact customer service. Using KIS 2013 with which I've never had a problem at all.

I certainly don't want to put off people from purchasing this suite. I recommend this to anyone running Win 7 because every Windows machine is different, even those running the same OS version because there is manufacturer software, some have the latest updates and some don't and other factors. I would like to think that the issue was with my particular system and not Kaspersky. Your other options are Bit Defender Internet Security 2014 Value M2 (3-PCs/2-Yrs) and Norton Internet Security 2014 - 1 User / 3 Licenses [Download]. Bitdefender definitely has superb protection but these past few years, has been quite buggy. Norton runs well, has a good firewall, never had problems with its updates, gui responsiveness but then, traditionally, it has not been on par with KIS & BD security wise. You might also want to check out ESET Smart Security 2014 Edition - 3 Users. Though not as powerful and comprehensive as the three mentioned, it generally runs smoothly, light and is usually simple to install.

BEFORE purchasing any suite, I strongly urge you to try their minimum 30 day free trial and on all computers if they have different versions of Windows. All the major companies offer a minimum of 30 days free trial. This way, you'll bypass unnecessary headaches with customer service or sending your package back to the seller. Also, please back up your data and it's also recommended that prior to your installation of a new suite, you create a new system restore point. You do this by going to MY COMPUTER -> SYSTEM PROPERTIES -> SYSTEM PROTECTION -> CREATE a restore point (keep the time and date handy). If you don't like the suite, uninstall it ( many companies have their own UNinstaller so it's better to go to their website and download the uninstaller rather than uninstalling the programs the traditional way I.E Control Panel) or if it has messed with your OS or ability to connect to the internet, simply go go system restore and revert back to the desired date & time. ( I know most of you didn't need this paragraph of "advice" ).

I am pretty bugged with these companies trying to bite off more than they can chew. What happened to just good web blocking, virus removal and a decent firewall. Now they're trying to add a ton of features and rushing the product without sufficient testing and resolving all the bugs.

If you do decide to purchase and install this software, I suggest not using the CD but to download the .exe file from Kaspersky's website and installing the software because the .exe file will install the latest 2014 build. You'll still need your CD envelope though because that's where your product code is.

Also, please be careful while purchasing from some individual sellers. I had one seller - Maxxam sell the 2013 ( which I intended to buy for cheap and then upgrade for free to 2014 ) product in a DVD case. It was packaged, sealed, the envelope was closed but the license turned out to be used. There were 315 days left instead of 365 and the license was only good for one computer instead of 3. Many others have also complained on his seller profile but Amazon has not taken any steps to curtail the problem.
